Power Plant Emissions

Since 1980, AEP has spent more than $7 billion to install environmental controls that have resulted in significant reductions in regulated emissions from our power plants. We have built nine scrubbers on approximately 7,900 megawatts (MW) of coal-fired generating capacity we own or operate between 2003 and 2011 and selective catalytic reduction systems on more than 11,000 MW since 2001. As a result, sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions have been reduced by 73 percent and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions have been reduced by about 80 percent from 1990 levels.
